Como: a cultural journey

If you really want to live the true experience of Lake Como, getting in touch with its history and enjoying his nature, you are probably looking for that branch of Lake Como that from the city of Como ideally draws  a triangle together with Bellaggio and Cernobbio.
You are about to start an incredible journey through different ages and enjoying breath-taking panoramas. Are you ready?

Como: story and nature

Believe it or not, local people's heart doesn’t beat (just) for George (Clooney)! Infact, still today, after more than 200 years after his birth, the city of Como celebrates one of his eminent citizens: Alessandro Volta - the well known Italian fisician famous for inventing the battery and having discovered many other things such as methane gas and consequently the lighter.
Walking down Como streets it’s easy to face monuments or buildings dedicated to him such as Tempio Voltiano, which was founded for celebrating his inventions, or the memorial in the city center. If you have decided to visit Como, this is the right moment! At the Historic Museum, from November 2017 to end of February 2018, there is an exhibition which celebrates 190th anniversary of Alessandro Volta’s death and the 90th anniversary of Tempio Voltiano’s foundation.

Art and culture are everywhwere in Como, a city that can give the tourist a 360 experience. You cannot miss the Dome: the city's cathedral, whose realization took almost 400 years but that today represents one of the best examples of late Gothic architecture in northern Italy.
The Archeological Museum is a small pearl and the most curious tourist about the history of Como will be satisfied after visiting it. And for the most demanding ones? Pinacoteca is unavoidable! Here you will admire painting and sculptural collections.
For those who love romantic places: the Villas around the lake are a must-see place! Villa Olmo is, of all, the most grandiose. Cultural exhibithion and events always take place in its main building and all around the villa there’s a big and wonderful garden.

Expecially during the summer time, it’s very easy and pleasant to move all around Como's area looking for nice villages to visit and historic places to discover. In this period, beside the public transport, you can also take steam ferry boat which is available every Thursday and during weekends. The journey from Como to Bellagio takes about 2 hours. From the boat, you can see some of the most characteristics places: Cernobbio, Argegno, Isola Comacina. A quicker alternative can be the Como-Brunate Funicular Railway which lets you enjoy the lake from above with just a 7 minutes journey.

Cernobbio: the romantic river
The Lake is very generous and never stops to enchant the visitor. The romantic river is the perfect Walk: from Cernobbio through the small villages of Moltrasio, Carate Urio to Torriggia di Laglio district. It’s the ideal route for those who love to be surprised by romantic places, small villages and historical villas.

Bellagio: Lake Como's pearl
Bellagio doesn’t need to be presented. Its beauty, its breathtaking glimpses are universally well known and are very attractive for tourists from Italy but also from abroad.
This historical village catches the tourists with its antiques and suggestive homes. The village is characterized by narrow alleys and stairs of pebble stones along which is possible to admire colored shops of high quality local handcrafts.
Here one of the nicest villa which faces the lake is Villa Serbelloni . Today it is a 5 star luxury hotel but in the past it used to be the vacation home of a rich and noble family from Milan.

From Villa Serbelloni you can take a walk to Punta Spartivento: lake Como's midpoint. Exactly in this point, the lake divides into two branches, one goes towards Como and the other one towards Lecco. Punta Spartivento is in the center of the lake, in this point the view is magnificent and it’s possible to see at the same time its three branches with mountains in the background.

Isola Comacina

Last but not least, the fascinating Isola Comacina.
It’s the only island of the lake and its role during romans and medieval age was really important. In this place the Magistri Comacini's ars muraria was born and the italian medieval art is thought to have been developed from here.
Nowadays, the island is appreciated for its wild and mysterious nature, for its history and because of the legend of its damnation.
Don’t be afraid and enjoy the island and don’t forget to have lunch in its famous inn.
